The Lehigh Valley Quarter Midget Racing Facility
TRACK
Our track is a 1/14th mile clay dirt track constructed in the shape of a tri-oval. Since our track sits on Pocono Raceway property its shape emulates that of the large track. The start/finish line is located at the center of the main or front straight, and the track is wide enough to accommodate passing anywhere. Cars enter the track at the top of turn 3 and exit at the top of turn 1. There is a hot chute located in the infield between the entrance to turn 2 and the center of the main straight. This allows the handlers to work on the cars without having to exit and re-enter the track using the exit and entrance ramps. The track is surrounded by a heavy duty extruded plastic guard rail and a 6' chain link fence. The exits of turns 1 and 3 have a soft wall system installed in front of the guard rail.
PITS and TECH building
The tech building sits in the pits just behind turn 2. The track side of the building adjoins the judges stand. As the cars exit the track, a gate system directs them into the tech building. There is a digital scale built into the floor which allows all cars to be weighed quickly. The building also provides a shady dry place for the tech committee to do more thorough inspections when needed. Pre-season full car inspections are done here. The gate system can be switched to send cars directly into the pits, bypassing the tech building, during practice and warm-up sessions. The pits are fully paved and pit spots are assigned by the Club secretary. License plates attached to the fence indicate your pit location. There is a marked off line up area in front of the track entrance gate. The pit steward has a copy of the line up for each race and is responsible for checking the safety equipment of each driver before they go out on the track. A copy of the line up is also posted on the pit (back) side of the tech building. A marker board lists the judges for each race and any special announcements.
ENTRANCE and PARKING
The facility is located at the corner of Long Pond Rd. and Andretti Rd. on the property of Pocono Raceway. Without the generosity of Dr's Joe and Rose Mattioli and the support of the Mattioli family we would not have this beautiful racing facility. Being located just off PA115 three miles South of Interstate 80, makes the track convienent to a large number of people. In addition to Pennsylvania, we have attracted members from New York and New Jersey. Free admission makes us a great entertainment value throughtout the summer. There is ample parking between the track and Andretti and Long Pond roads.
SCORING TOWER
The scoring tower is the nerve center of the track operations and sits above and behind the main grandstand. Behind the window in the front section is a long desk where the scorers sit to score the race, keep track of the laps, and order the cars for restarts. The Club uses a scoring computer and AMB transponders on each car as the main scoring system, but a team of scorers also scores each race as a backup. A view from inside the tower is shown below. The scoring computer and public address system is seen on the left. All announcements as well as the calling of each race are done from the tower.
At the beginning of the days activities, the handicapper and the scoring team register all the drivers for the night's races as they enter the pits. After registration closes, the team puts together the line ups for the night's races. The line ups are then posted on the back of the tech building before the start of the races.
The back section of the scoring tower is a multi-purpose room. It is used to store all the forms and paperwork needed to run the races. The track radios and rental transponders are stored there as well. The other primary use for the room is as a meeting room. Board meetings are held there throughout the summer. The room is also used to set up for special events such as the Kenny Hein Memorial Race.
REFRESHMENT STAND and PAVILLION
The pavillion is located between the bleachers and the refreshment stand. It provides a dry and shady place to eat and gather. The pavillion provides a great place to enjoy the wide selection of food offered in the refreshment stand. In addition to the regular race track fare of hot dogs, hamburgs, french fries, and soda, the stand also offers plain and flavored bottled waters, mozarella sticks, pierogis, cheese steaks and wraps. The refreshment stand is significant source of income for the club and is operated by the club members. From hot coffee and soup to ice cream and candy, the refreshment stand has you covered.
